Frequently Asked Questions

How does Photon save doctors time?

Photon handles most issues at the pharmacy so doctors don’t have to—anything non-clinical can be resolved without talking to a doctor (or anyone else for that matter). Here are a few issues where we can send a prescription to a new pharmacy without prescriber intervention: a medication is out of stock, the previously selected pharmacy is closed, or there is a long wait time at the pharmacy.

How difficult is it to integrate with Photon?

Our lightest-weight Low Code integration takes a few hours, with our Embed integration taking a couple of weeks at most. We also offer fully custom API Integrations, but most customers find that the Embedded workflow is seamless and easy to customize.

Does Photon send e-prescriptions?

Yes, Photon sends e-prescriptions like every other prescription tool, except in Photon we allow patients to choose pharmacies after prescriptions are written. Patients can also change their pharmacy without speaking to a doctor for issues like out-of-stock medications, long wait times, traveling on vacation, price, or personal preference.

Is Photon a pharmacy?

Short answer: No. Photon is a prescription network of providers and pharmacies including mail order and local retail pharmacies. For digital health companies and prescribers, Photon provides easy integrations to many major mail order pharmacies, making it easier to set up mail order pharmacies as an option for patients.

Can I get prescription medications through Photon?

Photon does not prescribe medications directly, but we do build prescribing tools for doctors and other licensed prescribers. If you are a patient looking for medication, please consult a medical professional.

Is it safe for patients to manage their own prescriptions?

Photon prescriptions are the treatment pathway—only a doctor can write a prescription, which are stored in the cloud and are completely secure. Photon allows patients, prescribers, or medical staff to place orders, which are the fulfillment pathway—anyone with secure access to the prescription can choose a pharmacy.

Does Photon have integrations with mail order pharmacies?

Yes! In Photon, mail order is its own category of pharmacies. We have partnerships with many mail order pharmacies that offer specialized services (compounding, custom packaging, order and shipping status). You can also send to any mail order pharmacy in the United States.

Does Photon support controlled substances (EPCS)?

Short answer is: not right now. From a technical standpoint, Photon follows DEA guidelines for authentication, data transfer, patient safety checks, and transmission requirements. That said, we do not currently support controlled substances at the moment, but will soon!
